Constructs such as ageism, cultural biases, and geography and their influence on perception and treatment of older adults will be explored. Age-related changes will be discerned from potential pathophysiological changes in cognition and behavior. Warning signs of potential cognitive impairment will be examined within a rural context of care. Resources for caregiver assistance will be provided.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nExamine how ageism, cultural biases, and geography may influence common\nmisconceptions about aging.\nDistinguish age-related body, brain, and functional changes from signs of potential disease.\nIdentify evidence-informed wellness activities that can be used as part of a comprehensive wellness plan to promote healthy aging.\n\nWestern New York Rural Area Health Education Center, Inc. (WNY R-AHEC) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Boards for Social Work (#SW-0685), Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Practitioners (#MHC-0268), and Speech Language Pathology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers, physical therapists and assistants, occupational therapists, and assistants, licensed mental health counselors, and speech language pathologists.\n
